The SMT160-30 temperature sensor

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The SMT160-30 is a three terminal integrated temperature sensor, with a duty-cycle output. Two terminals are used for the power supply of 5 Volts and the third terminal carries the output signal.

The SMT160-30 (TO18 model) has an overall absolute accuracy of 0.7 °C in the range from -30 °C to +100 °C and an accuracy of 1.2 °C from -45 to +130 °C. This makes the sensor especially useful in all applications where "human" (climate control, food processing etc.) conditions are to be controlled. Because of the high resolution and stability of the sensor (5mK), calibration can give the sensor an accuracy of between 0.02 °C and 0.05 °C

A duty cycle modulated output is used because this output is interpretable by a microprocessor without A-D converter, while the analogue information is still available.

The CMOS output of the sensor can handle cable length up to 20 meters. This makes the SMT160-30 suited for remote sensing and control applications.

Our smart temperature sensors are available in a number of encapsulations: TO18, TO92, TO220, SOIC-8L and others. The temperature sensors are available as naked die as well. On request the sensors can also be built in a customer specified encapsulation.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

This output is standard microcontroller compatible and can be connected directly to most processors. By measuring both T1 and T2, the temperature can be easily computed from T1/T2 = 0.32 + 0.0047 * t (°C) (the diagram right). If the output signal is measured with an analogue device, the temperature can be obtained as well. The mean voltage (and the RMS value as well) is directly proportional to the duty cycle and the supply voltage. So Vout / Vdd represents T1 / T2 just as well. In this way the temperature can be measured in an analogue way as well as digitally equally simple and accurate.

Sensor: SMT30-16 TO18
Probe: stainless steel tube 7 mm. x 40 mm.
Cable: 5 m. PVC shielded, 3.5 mm.

The probe itself can be in contact with everything that the stainless steel will resist. The cable, however, will resist contact with water for some time, but was NOT designed the be permanently exposed to fluids of any kind.

The SMTAS08
The Smart Temperature Acquisition System(SMTAS08) is an 8 channel temperature measurement system. It was designed to get the best possible temperature measurement results (a resolution of 0,02°C!) with the SMT160 Smartec temperature sensors.

The SMTAS04
This smaller sibling of the SMTAS08 has 4 channels and is available in both USB and RS232 versions. When connected to a desktop computer, no power supply is needed.

OTHER METHODS FOR MEASURING TEMPERATURES
